The Buddha Effect on Business in Modern China

Abstract
Buddhism has had a significant, if underappreciated, influence on Chinese culture. Brought to China from India centuries ago through trade routes
of land and sea, Buddhist ideas and values have deeply embedded themselves within Chinese culture and continue to influence modern-day Chinese
business practices. During the period following the 1949 Communist revolution, the Chinese government stifled Buddhism. In recent years, the government
has taken a more tolerant approach. By understanding the interplay between the Buddhist faith and Chinese culture, Westerners may gain better insights into
Chinese culture, which may enhance their ability to negotiate successful business deals.
